Within battery production, electrode foils undergo a multitude of sequential, successive process steps. During the coating, drying, calendering, or winding processes, strongly varying mechanical and thermal forces act upon the sensitive substrate. The extremely thin metal and collector foils react highly sensitively to the smallest mechanical influences or inaccuracies within the line. Transient fluctuations in web tension inevitably lead to axial web migration, local load peaks, wrinkling, or non-uniform material guidance.These defect patterns are transferred directly to subsequent finishing stages and, in the worst case, can lead to costly foil tears in the dryer or calender. For production managers and process engineers, the controlled, low-tension guidance of sensitive foils therefore becomes a decisive lever to reduce material scrap, guarantee homogeneous web running, and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) over the long term.
The resulting web tension within a production line is not determined by a single component. It is the result of a dynamic interplay of various physical influencing factors along the entire web path. High speeds, batch-dependent variations in the material properties of the metal foils, massive changes in diameter during winding and unwinding, and abrupt acceleration phases permanently alter the mechanical stress on the material web.In addition, roller geometry, the precise parallel alignment of the rotors, and the homogeneity of the load distribution across the entire working width influence the actual tensile stress during operation. Especially with ultra-thin anode and cathode strips, absolutely uniform force transmission across the entire width is mandatory. Even minimal local tension peaks lead to asymmetrical stretching, which can cause defects in subsequent coating processes.
A permanently constant web tension cannot be achieved through isolated individual measures. Only the interaction of high-precision components makes it possible to keep web processes stable within defined tolerance windows.
